Axe Night!

Last year, Ben transformed our first
event, previously called Survival Camp,
to Axe Night, and the response has
been fantastic. This year, we had over
50 new students attend, handing out a
free axe handle to each of them. We
pre-painted some purple, some white,
and some we left natural.
We also
spent time telling them about Wesley,
SFA, and Nacogdoches.

Campus Conversations

I always tell students that I don’t care
what gets them to Wesley. I don’t care why
they initially choose to attend an event we
have. That’s partly true. I care a little because
I want to know what is reaching the students
best to have them consider walking in the
door. However, what I mean when I tell
students that I don’t care is this: what I really
care about is what happens when they get
here.

Students have all kinds of reasons to
show up to Wesley. The most common is that
a friend invited them to come with them.
Some visit because they have a romantic
attachment. Some walk in because we
offered a free meal one week--some because
we had a game night, or they wanted to buy
a parking pass, or they needed directions, or
their youth director or pastor suggested it, or
they were lonely. There is no singular reason.

I had a conversation with a first-year
student this week who said he’d been
meaning to drop by but just hadn’t made it
yet. I asked why he picked that day to join us.

WEsley

Witness

He fingered a black and purple silicone band
on his wrist. It was one of the bands we’d
handed out on campus at the beginning of the
semester with our website and slogan “Finding
Faith with Friends” on it.

“I was trying to take it off and was having
trouble with it for some reason,” he
continued.
“I said to myself, ‘What even is
this?’ And then I saw ‘sfawesley.org’ on it.”

He visited us online and found we were
having worship that night, so he decided that
God was nudging him to come. And, yes, he
even invited a friend. Thank you, Holy Spirit.

Kayak Trip

We’ve been traveling to Broken Bow,
Oklahoma since 2008 to kayak the
Mountain Fork River and visit Beaver’s
Bend State Park. Several new students
and even more new kayakers took to the
water this year to brave the rapids, rocks,
and waterfall. The weather was perfect!
FUMC DeQueen in Arkansas has hosted
us each year, and we are grateful for
their hospitality! Oh, and they found the
swingset at the church, too!

Feed the Band

We fed about 270 Lumberjack
Marching Band students lunch this year
with the help of Perritte Memorial
Methodist Church and FUMC Nac. This
annual event helps the band to
experience Wesley first-hand.

Securely!

“I decided to continue to attend the Wesley Foundation because they stand by the agenda they promote, “finding faith with friends”. During my time, I have strengthened my faith and made many more life long friends! I do not believe there is anywhere better to be than here at the SFA Wesley Foundation!”

Scout Guptill, Second-Year Geology Major

Rachel Welshimer, First-Year Biology/Pre-Vet Major

Gunter Chapel

We had one final worship service in Gunter
Chapel at the end of last spring before it was
remodeled this summer. We spent about $40,000
to make it a much more usable and welcoming
space for students throughout the week. For
those who remember how hot it used to be all the
time, it now has insulation and is cool, even in the
summer!

Christianna Brooks, Second-Year Music Education Major

"I decided to continue to go back to the Wesley Foundation after my first time
going because of how ‘at home’ I felt. The people there very quickly learned my
name and the building is open all day, so it gave me a place to study quietly,
socialize and relax."

Worship

Our attendance averages about 40 on
Wednesdays this semester, about 10 more than
last fall. 90% of our students are first or second-
years, which means we have a strong base of
students. We have at least one or two gospel
songs with Ben preaching and Tom offering
communion each week. Wesley has been offering
communion every week in worship for over 35
years. It helps bring students closer to God and
experience the invitational nature of our
Methodist and Wesleyan heritage and theology.

“When I became a drummer for Wesley, I felt this sense of truly giving my gift
towards God and using it for Him and Him alone. I feel so open with God when I
play my instruments on stage because I give it all to Him. Wesley makes me feel
safe and loved, and the people have shown me so much love and care over time.”

Dustin Smith, Second-Year Theatre Major

Wesley Interns

We have two student interns this semester.
Wayne Ellis (on bass), who started in the middle of
the spring semester, is our relatively new music
ministries intern. He is helping Hearts Afire, our
praise team, lean more comfortably into more
gospel music to reflect our growing diversity. Matt
Purcell (on keyboard) is our new Pastoral Assistant
Intern funded by a grant. He is exploring full-time
vocational ministry in a church setting and helps
with outreach, prayer, discipleship, and other
similar areas.

“The kayak trip helped me create a family and a community with the members
in Wesley. The campus preacher Ben West has helped me learn more about God
and grow my relationship with Him. The environment at Wesley is so positive
and welcoming that it’s like a second home to me!”

In Memory of Andrew Bryngelson

Andrew Bryngelson passed away unexpectedly on August 11, 2024, at the age
of 35. Andrew, in his iconic red hoodie, was always at Wesley filling the building
with his infectious laughter. The Wesley Foundation was one of the places his
family asked people to donate in his memory. Because of Andrew’s
involvement in Hearts Afire, we’ve decided to designate these donations
toward a new soundboard and equipment for our worship services. You can
donate using the QR code in the newsletter. Any money in excess of what can
wisely be spent on such items will be used as directed by the board.

Student Baptism

Last spring, we had a profession of faith from a
student who had already been baptized, and this
fall, Scout Guptill (left) , was baptized at Wesley.
After talking with Scout, he wanted to be
immersed, which is one of the methods the United
Methodist Church offers (along with sprinkling and
pouring). He also wanted it to be at Wesley, and
we made sure to make that happen. It was a
fantastic night to formally add Scout to the
worldwide community of faith!
